Congratulations to Fourth-Cohort Alumnus Malivan Kawru on His Admission to the Ph.D. Program in Austronesian Cultural Studies, College of Humanities, National Taitung University

Malivan Kawru, a fourth-cohort alumnus of the Executive Master's Program in Indigenous Studies, has demonstrated outstanding academic performance and strong research initiative since entering the program in the 2022 academic year.

During his graduate studies, Malivan devoted himself to research on self-made hunting firearms with the goal of promoting safer and more accessible hunting practices. His master's thesis, “Guns in Contemporary Indigenous Imagery: Practices and Modifications of Self-Made Hunting Firearms,” responded to the Regulations Governing the Permission and Management of Self-Made Hunting Guns and Fishing Guns for Indigenous Peoples and Fishermen promulgated by the National Police Agency, Ministry of the Interior.

Through his research and innovation, he sought to contribute to the preservation and transmission of Indigenous hunting knowledge and technical practices. His modified “lever-action sliding sleeve extraction system” successfully obtained a Republic of China (Taiwan) patent certificate, receiving recognition for its innovative achievement.

After completing his master's degree, Malivan has continued to dedicate himself to Indigenous issues. In addition to participating in various hunting-related lectures and forums, he currently hosts the program “Navalj – Voice of Austronesia” on Alian Radio FM96.3 Indigenous Broadcasting Station, inviting Indigenous community members, scholars, and experts to share cultural knowledge and experiences while actively promoting public dialogue and cultural exchange.

To further develop his master's research and explore issues related to Indigenous archaeological sites and cultural landscapes, Malivan applied this year to the Ph.D. Program in Austronesian Cultural Studies, College of Humanities, National Taitung University, and successfully stood out among numerous applicants to gain admission.
